Rush Hour Chaos
It was reported that in mid-November of 2016, commuters travelling through south-west London faced chaos as a leaf-clearing train broke down in the midst of rush hour services. As a result, severe delays were announced by Southern Rail. A signalling problem at Streatham added to these delays as Southern Rail and Thamslink trains were left unable to run towards Clapham Junction and Sutton.
Delays are a nightmare as it is- however when they occur during rush hour, it is no surprise that complete and utter chaos breaks out at many railway services. In fact, many angry commuters turned to the social media network, Twitter, in order to voice their frustration:
One commuters said “Aren’t #southernrail bored of saying ‘I apologise for the delay?’ Or are they used to it, just like I am?”
Meanwhile, another gentlemen tweeted very bluntly with less sarcasm as he stated “My train cancelled again. You’re a shambolic service #southernrail”
In fact, many commuters were in hysterics at the train service’s reason for the delays, which left one commuter stranded on a platform for over 45 minutes after consecutive service were cancelled one after another, claiming the broken down leaf cleaning train was an ‘embarrassing’ excuse.
Southern Rail posted a statement on their website, which advised customers to opt for alternative routes between Dorking, Wimbledon and London. Despite the delays, which occurred for the majority of the morning and the aftermath resulting in rush hour lasting an extra hour than usual, all the commuters received was an apology.
